Who Was Rabbi Nachman of Breslov?
Born in 1772 in Medzhybizh, Ukraine, Rabbi Nachman was the great-grandson of the Baal Shem Tov (founder of Hasidism). He revitalized the Hasidic movement by emphasizing joy, deep personal prayer (Hitbodedut), simplicity, and faith.
Rabbi Nachman’s teachings focus on overcoming despair, finding light in darkness, and maintaining constant happiness. His most famous sayings include:
- “It is a great mitzvah to always be happy.”
- “If you believe that you can damage, believe that you can repair.”
- “The whole world is a very narrow bridge, and the main thing is not to be afraid at all.”
The Legacy of the Rosh Hashanah Pilgrimage
Before his passing in 1810, Rabbi Nachman expressed a profound testament to his followers: “My Rosh Hashanah is greater than everything. No one should be absent!” He promised that anyone who comes to his grave on Rosh Hashanah, gives to charity, and recites the Tikkun HaKlali (The Ten Psalms) will receive spiritual intercession.
Despite centuries of geopolitical shifts, including severe suppression during the Soviet era when visiting the tomb was forbidden, the tradition survived through underground devotion. Today, independent Ukraine welcomes tens of thousands of visitors every autumn to Pushkina Street in Uman.
